A moral tale of Horses
The Emperor Ming's daughter fell in love with a commoner. Ming was furious. He loved his daughter, but he knew what was best for her, as all fathers do. He ordered the magician to end the affair, so his daughter could marry the man he had chosen.

The magician was, between you and me, not as good at magic as he made out. He could not alter true love. So he sent the boy's spirit into that other creature that the princess loved dearly, her stallion.

The stallion reared in surprise, but quickly decided he liked being able to think.

The boy was not so sure he liked being a horse, but there were some great advantages, his strength, his speed, the way he could jump. He still loved the princess, but in a different way. He loved the feel of her hands when she patted him and the sugar cane she brought him to eat.

He became mildly obsessed with a mare in the next field. The mare had a foal, but would soon be back in season. He practiced jumping the five bar gate between the fields.

The princess watched in dismay as her lover showed an interest in the mare. She had a double love for this stallion, her heart ached with love. She begged the magician to help her to be close to her lover, closer than any other, closer than that mare.

The magician did not know what to do, so he cast a spell using her own words. "Turn this princess into a creature who will get closer to the stallion than any other, closer than that mare."

Of course as we know she turned into a fly, a horse fly.

Wheeeee, she loved being able to fly. She was not too good at first, but she soon got the hang of it. Those horses, she loved them all. They tasted so good. The foal was grazing when the fly landed on it. It tried to bite her. No chance, she was far too quick.

She landed on the mare and had a good meal. The mare raced around the field trying to dislodge her. No chance, she drank her fill and then, feeling a little bloated, she flew away.

She looked for her love. She landed on his back, it felt good and he smelled so tasty. She basked in the sun and wriggled down into his coat. She gave him a little love bite. The stallion felt an unbearable itch. He flicked his tail, rubbed up against trees, then got down and rolled, kicking his hocks and rolling back and forth, until the itching stopped.

The moral is:

For parents - don't try to arrange your children's lives for them, they always know best, or they think they do, which causes all the trouble.

For girls - don't ask for too much, you may be given it.

For boys - don't fall in love with a princess. It only causes trouble.

For magicians - don't be silly there aren't any magicians.

Now look at the horses.

Horses grazing

One misty pale gold morning, I went for a walk with my watercolours, and saw these lovely creatures grazing. So I painted them, standing up, using dew which had formed on the long grasses, for the water part of watercolours.

Venetian Horses

These are the four horses of St Mark's Basilica, Venice. The original bronze horses have been brought inside to protect them from the weather, which has the wonderful advantage that you can see them close up if you climb up the Basilca. They are superb. I love them. I have painted several pictures of them.
After many hundreds of years, they are still as lively and bright as when they were first made. The artist must have known horses intimately. He was not, of course, Venetian. Venetians stole them from elsewhere [Constantinope I think]. I have never seen a living horse in Venice, they are not the ideal form of transport over canals. But I think these four horses have come to rest now.
